Local area networks: The network managers' perspective

Abstract

With the proliferation of microcomputers and a need to interconnect them, local area networks (LANs) are gaining popularity. Issues facing LAN managers have not yet been adequately investigated due to the recent emergence of this technology and lack of prior experience. This paper investigates current practice in the introduction and management of LANs. Thirteen LAN installations were studied. The manager in charge of each was interviewed and asked the same set of predetermined questions in a structured approach. Each manager was then asked to complete a questionnaire on their perception of the many facets of the network. The interview and questionnaire elicited answers to managers' perceptions of the benefits and drawbacks of the LAN, its perceived impact on users, justifying LANs to management, and the significant issues facing network managers in implementing LANs. The results and implications for the LAN manager are discussed.
