Abstract

The history, chemistry, pharmacologic properties and reactions, and toxicity of local anesthetic agents are reviewed. Local anesthesia has been widely accepted in dental practice for many years. It has only been with the recent development of sensitive electrophysiologic and analytic methods, however, that much of the basic knowledge of the properties and reactions of local anesthetic agents has been elucidated. A review of pertinent aspects of the history, chemistry, pharmacologic properties and reactions, and the toxicity of local anesthetic agents in dentistry is presented.
