Abstract
Recent evidence on the existence and characteristics of local mode behaviour in the stretching vibrations of small symmetrical molecules is reviewed. Classical and quantum mechanical studies and available spectroscopic data all point to the development of a series of progressively close local mode multiplets in the eigenvalue spectrum, whenever the bond anharmonicity parameter is larger than the energy splitting of the stretching fundamentals. A correlation scheme between local mode and normal mode behaviour is described.KeywordsNormal ModeLocal ModeEigenvalue SpectrumQuantum Mechanical StudyMode PictureThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
