Abstract

In veterinary surgery, thoracic and abdominal procedures are not generally considered to be areas in which local analgesics can be applied easily, but strategically applied drugs can significantly improve the stability of the general anaesthetic and post-operative comfort of the animal. The techniques through which the drugs can be applied range from simple splash blocks and wound bathing to more technically complex specific epidurals, paravertebrals, spinal nerve blocks and infusion catheters. This article will describe the advantages and disadvantages of each technique with some specific drug suggestions and doses.
