Abstract

Solar sailing has a long tradition of conceptual studies, and currently enjoys a surge of interest in terms both of technological missions and of proposals for its use in scientific missions. The asteroids supposedly being the source of most of the known classes of meteorites, the results of a space mission to them — combined with data obtained in the laboratory — would contribute to the understanding of the origins of the solar system. The aim of the paper is to examine the applicability of a solar sail technology to such a future mission.
