Abstract
This paper investigates the use of large-scale wayside energy storage to reduce operational costs of ac electric traction power networks. This paper also introduces a method of estimating the battery capacity, based on manufacturer's charging and discharging specifications. The battery model is simple and easy to incorporate into load flow simulation algorithms. The concept and the battery model are validated through a feasibility study within Aurizon's heavy haul electric railway network.
