Abstract

Load management plays a vital role in an islanded microgrid as it is essential to maintain the generation vs. demand balance at every instant. The microgrid Load Management System (LMS) needs to continuously evaluate and prioritize load demands to maintain this balance. In this paper, load measurement, classification, and control, to improve microgrid reliability, have been studied. Different control strategies based on microgrid status for near real time operation and data acquisition are presented. Active high-speed load control operation is demonstrated in grid connected and islanded mode throughout seasonal variation. The role of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for effective load control is also explained. An active microgrid test system is modelled and simulated. Detailed analysis of the results shows evidence that the load management system can ensure a stable islanded microgrid.
