Abstract

A flexible bearing is the key component of a harmonic drive reducer. Thus, it is crucial to study load distribution and contact stress for the design and prediction of the fatigue life of flexible bearings. When a flexible bearing is assembled in a wave generator, pre-deformation occurs. In such a situation, rigid ring theory is not applicable. In this study, a multi-body contact model of a flexible bearing was developed with ANSYS and used to study the load distribution and contact pressure. The simulation results were verified using Hertz contact theory and elasticity theory. The analysis results showed that predeformation decreased the bearing region and increased the maximum load of the ball and contact stress. These results provide reliable theoretical bases for the design of flexible bearings.
