Abstract

Based on the geology of the area, soil profiles can vary with depth. Construction of drilled piles in these varying soil formations is a challenge and it is important to better quantify the overall behavior of the piles. In this study, 21 load-displacement behavior of Auger cast in place (ACIP) piles in mixed soil profiles were analyzed. The data was collected from full-scale tests performed over the past two decades in Texas. For the ACIP piles, the diameters varied from 356 mm (14 in.) to 610 mm (24 in.) and the length varied from 7.6 m (25 ft) to 35 m (116 ft). The measured pile capacities varied from 756 to 4003 kN (85 to 450 t). The tests were modeled using a non-linear load-displacement relationship. For the ACIP piles in mixed soil profile, the ratio of pile displacement (at 50% of the ultimate capacity) to diameter ratio (50/d) was in the range of 0.1% to 1.8%. The ultimate capacities of the piles were predicted well using the hyperbolic relationship.
