Abstract

Academic research, and consequently the world of scientific publishing, are substantially changing. Academic libraries are asked to recognize trends in research and developments in publishing in order to be able to answer through their services to the requirements of researchers. Library collections are the basis for construction of these services. Since the 90’s library collections have been increasing the amount of digital materials, e-journals, e-books, databases, also as a consequence of some acquisitions models like the “big deal”. In the last years, major publishers have been developing new services to support all stages of the production and dissemination of scientific research and we are talking about a “new big deal”. Bibliometrics has a great impact on scientific research, mainly for its large use in evaluation of research, and it’s also used as a tool for collection management in libraries, so contributing to redefine the research scenario in all the forms in which it is disseminated and communicated. Originally bibliometrics was conceived in a quite different way as compared to today though. The cultural paradigm referring to open access and open science is developing also as a reaction to ongoing changes.
