Abstract
”La tienda de munecos” (The dolls' shop), a collection of short stories by Venezuelan writer Julio Garmendia (1898-1977) published in 1927, is one of the most important precedents of modern fantastic narrative (fantasy) in Spanish American literature. Garmendia, with a subtle irony and a suggestive language, creates a singular world of fiction through humor basically parodical, or ironic, and the intrusion of supernatural phenomena into an otherwise realist narrative. In his short stories ”El alma” y ”Narracion de las nubes”, the author retells traditional topics of the fantastic literature, like the pact with the devil and the supernatural journey, whereas ”El difunto yo” is a brilliant reflection on the double theme. The aim of this article is to emphasize the originality and the effort to update the endless game between reality and fantasy created by Garmendia.
