Abstract

(Ln0.9Gd0.05Yb0.05)2Zr2O7 (Ln = Sm, Nd) ceramics were synthesized by pressureless sintering at 1700 °C in air using powders with a chemical-coprecipitation and calcination method. (Ln0.9Gd0.05Yb0.05)2Zr2O7 ceramics exhibit a single pyrochlore structure. The thermal expansion of (Ln0.9Gd0.05Yb0.05)2Zr2O7 ceramics are of the same order of magnitude as 7±1wt.% yttria-stabilized zirconia (7YSZ). Thermal conductivities of (Ln0.9Gd0.05Yb0.05)2Zr2O7 ceramics are lower than that of 7YSZ. Thus, (Ln0.9Gd0.05Yb0.05)2Zr2O7 ceramics are potential candidates for high-temperature thermal barrier applications.
