Abstract

This article studies the part of science in the birth and setting up of antisemitism in the French society. The question is quite important, since the period endows science with modernity and power upon western societies. First statement of fact : scientific antisemitism is late to appear among the French scientific community. Racial anthropology which becomes institutionalized as early as 1860 is part of a gradual republican tradition and is quite impervious to antisemitism up to the thirties. Nevertheless it is from this group that will emerge later on one of its most violent and fierce propagandists, George Montandon. Studying how racial antisemitism grew among the learned group proves that even if some of them fought quite openly against antisemitism, no one can assert that there was a denial or a marginalization of scientific antisemitism by the end of the thirties.
