Abstract

The midwife's field of competence is related to women's sexual and reproductive health care from a holistic perspective, based on a salutogenic model and the promotion of physiology. It is a professional recognized by the World Health Organization and European health institutions for its impact on improving reproductive health and its contribution to the sustainability of health systems. The midwifery profession has traditionally been an independent profession from the nursing profession and continues to be so in other European countries. In Spain, since 1953, midwifery has been considered a nursing specialty, which was integrated into the Specialized Health Care Training model in 1992. Its legal framework is regulated by the regulations applicable to Specialized Health Training, the European regulations on competencies and training of midwives, their transposition into Spanish legislation and the training program for the specialty of midwifery.
