Abstract

The purposes of this study were determine reasons of preservice middle school mathematics teachers in preferring teaching as a profession and investigate whether these preferences change depending on grade level. For this purpose, in the 2013-2014 academic year, 144 preservice middle school mathematics teachers who enrolled in Hacettepe University were selected for the study. Data was collected with the instrument developed by the researchers and then analyzed. Results of the study showed that the most effective factor for preservice middle school mathematics teachers in preferring mathematics teaching is my personality is appropriate, the least influential factor is to replace the traditional teachers. When these preferences were examined for status change in terms of grade level, it was seen that the first and last choices were the same but there were differences in the remaining choices. Analysis of data revealed that these differences are not statistically significant. Based on the data obtained, various suggestions have been made
