Abstract

The present situation in studies on the role of trace elements in human beings under normal and diseased conditions is presented. The difficulties of drawing conclusions concerning the role of various trace elements in human diseases is discussed. With an increased reliability of results due to better methods in determining trace elements in tissues the cooperation between various scientific groups in this field should be extended. Determinations of trace elements in human tissues are necessary in order to be able to draw reliable conclusions about their possible role in diseases. In this connection degenerative diseases are of special interest. Studies on human tissues should be carried on together with studies on trace elements in human environment, i.e. in food, soil, water and air.
