Abstract

The article examines political and cultural developments in the Slovene capital city during and after the break-up of the Habsburg Monarchy based on the diary notes of Fran Milčinski (1867–1932), a prominent judge of the Higher Provincial Court of Ljubljana. The main emphasis is on Milčinski’s observations pertaining to the end of the Danube Monarchy, the establishment of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, Slovene-Austrian border conflicts, and the first-year anniversary of the new state. In his diary, Milčinski gives us valuable insights into the activities of the leading political figures of his time. His assessments of the Slovene transition from the Habsburg Monarchy to Yugoslavia are short, but lucid, containing some interesting behind-the-scenes details.
