Abstract

This case study describes the lived experience of an individual who underwent bariatric surgery. A qualitative methodology was applied, and interpretations were made to develop a thematic analysis from an in-depth interview. As themes emerge across qualitative studies, these themes may be implemented by the healthcare team as part of the decision-making process for bariatric candidates or to support patients postoperatively who are about to embark on life after bariatric surgery. Two themes emerged from this case study: be carefulwho you tell because the stigma continues and totally different but still evolving. Some elements of these themes are consistent with previous work in this area, while other elements appear to be unique to this study. In conclusion, the journey of the bariatric patient does not end with the surgery; it only begins. Through qualitative inquiry and dissemination of the findings, healthcare providers will be better equipped to prepare the patient for the challenges and triumphs that accompany surgical weight loss experiences.
