Abstract

As I look back over more than 40 years in the academy I see universities evolving toward profit-oriented corporate models and concurrent management and accounting techniques including the allocation of teaching duties to highly qualified but low-paid PhDs with no hope of tenure-track jobs. This effectively removes tenure as protection for academic freedom and exposes new PhDs to years of unrewarding, badly-paid work with little hope of the writing and research necessary for academic careers. Thus, it seems to me they are ill advised to continue in these systems. Applied anthropology has been incredibly successful in using anthropological knowledge outside the academy. I therefore urge graduate students to abandon graduate studies and move directly into applied work. I would urge those employed in adjunct positions to continue to organize for common interests via the union movement in conjunction with friendly anthropological organizations such as AAA.
