Abstract
A post appeared on Jiangwaijiang (JWJ), an online neighborhood forum of Riverside Garden, addressing to users to discuss affairs of the housing estate, then and now1. It received thousands of views and hundreds of replies. People marveled at how it has changed from a tranquil suburban resort to a full-fledged urban community in a decade. Riverside Garden is one of the earliest commodity housing estates in Panyu, Guangzhou. It was open to market in 1992 and currently accommodates some 12,000 households and occupies an area of 0.81 km2. The networked lives epitomized by residents of Riverside Garden serve a prototype of commodity housing estates in urban China, the residential experience in which is a total departure from what previous generations of Chinese urbanites experienced in the work-unit compounds.
