Abstract

The author focuses on free programs librarians can use in creative ways to revitalize reference services. By pairing creativity with a student-centered approach, commonplace utilities can improve the effectiveness of in-person and e-mail reference sessions. TinyURL.com shortens URLs for both in-person and e-mail reference transactions allowing students to access previously viewed searches. SnagIt is useful in e-mail reference interactions when visual aides are necessary. The author also discusses the pedagogical issues involved in instructing students in the use of citation managers such as NoodleBib Express.
