Abstract
This chapter examines how the lyrics of modern Tibetan songs communicate to Tibetan audiences. It argues that the lyrics of modern Tibetan songs contribute significantly and diversely to the ways Tibetan audiences listen to this music. This is because these songs are sacred sounds that index the holiness of the Tibetan language, secular sounds associated with the political and cultural struggles of the community and they are also carriers of meaningful semantic information.
