Abstract

SUMMARY The lithostratigraphical nomenclature of the Lias Group in the Yorkshire Basin is revised; two new formations, the Redcar Mudstone Formation and the Whitby Mudstone Formation, respectively replace ‘Lower’ and ‘Upper’ Lias (as used in a lithostratigraphical sense). This revised classification can be applied throughout the basin, including the Hambleton Hills, where the Felixkirk Borehole, recently drilled, has provided a cored sequence through the Lias.
