Abstract
The electrochemical insertion of lithium in the M-type ferrite with formula BaFe 12O 19 has been investigated. The galvanostatic discharge curves of the (−)Li/electrolyte/Li xBaFe 12O 19(+) cell show a quasi-linear voltage decrease from 3.1 V vs. Li Li + at x=0 to about 1.0 V vs. Li Li + at x=1 followed by an extended plateau. After the shallow discharge, indicative of a single-phase reaction, the X-ray diffraction spectrum of the cathode pellet remains unchanged while after a very deep discharge, e.g. when 25 lithium equivalents are inserted per oxide mole, a multiphase region is obtained and the hexagonal phase is no longer visible. The cyclic voltammograms of the compound agree with these results.
