Abstract

The diffusion properties of Li in an andesitic and pitchstone melt have been determined over the temperature range 1300–1400°C. The diffusion data have been fitted to an Arrhenius relationship between log D0 and 1/T, and give relatively small activation energies of diffusion: 21.4±5.8 kcal mol−1 in the andesite and 20.1±2.8 kcal mol−1 in the pitchstone. Li+, unlike several other cations, shows similar diffusivities in these melt compositions to that in a basaltic melt. Despite the similar ionic radius of Li+ to that of Co2+, the diffusion properties of the two ions are very different from each other.
