Abstract
Among pre-Aksumite lithic assemblages and surface collections from highland northern Ethiopia, well-made convex scraper-like forms are frequently encountered that exhibit a previously unrecognised form of use-wear. Evidence derived from close examination of artefacts from several sites, including primarily from a large and wealthy building complex at Seglamen, southwest of Aksum, is presented of the use of these stone tools to assist in shaping and finishing ceramic wares. The probable involvement of handstones, burnishers and other stone tools in the formation of pre-Aksumite ceramic wares is also considered.
