Abstract

Purpose of the study. To characterize S. Smal-Stotsky's literary works in research Franco against the background of time. Research methods. The article used historical biographical and comparative methods. The scientific novelty is that the analysis of the works of S. Smal-Stotsky in Franco's studies against the background of time was made first. The figure of Professor Stepan Smal-Stotsky - linguist, literary critic, culturologist stands out among prominent figures of the national and cultural life of the Bukovina region in the late XIX - early XX century. Scientist He was elected a member of the Bukovinsky Diet and the Austrian Parliament, as well as a deputy regional marshal Bukovina. As a representative of Bukovina, S. Smalktotsky was at the heart of the creation of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kiev, which was a great achievement of the Ukrainian People's Republic. S. Smal-Stotsky enjoyed great respect and prestige among famous political figures. Findings. Professor S. Smal-Stotsky is primarily known as a linguist, author of the first Russian grammar, which, together with Professor T. Gartner, was published in 1893. The introduction in 1895 of the schools of Bukovina, distinct from the Russian Ukrainian phonetic spelling, forever rejected the attempt of the Muscovites under the flag of the "All-Russian" party to Russify the Bukovina region. It was not only a scientific victory, but also an ideological one.Taking into account the characteristic features of the era, using it as a background against which modernpolitical thinking of Ukraine, Professor S. Smal-Stotsky outlined the most important aspects of the literary and civic activities of I. Franko and its importance for the further development of Ukrainian culture.
