Abstract
To the Editor.— With reference to the observation, a country with less than 10% made by Arneson and Hammerschmidt (1980;244:1139), I would like to point out that India's literacy is mentioned as, total: 33.3%, male: 46.3%, female: 18.8% in the new Encyclopaedia Britannica, Micropaedia , vol 10, p 983. The Bri tannica mentions many countries, unfortunately, with less than 10% literacy. India is not one of them. I would assume that Arneson and Hammerschmidt have attempted to guess the figure unessential to their otherwise excellent photoessay
