Abstract

This paper attempts to briefly review research undertaken in the area of listening, in particular that which has relevance for the classroom teacher. While an investigation of the correlates of listening, such as: age, sex, content, intelligence and presentation is necessary this is not the major focus of the paper.Listening is one area that is of crucial importance to both the behaviourist and cognitist in their attempt to provide an adequate teaching model. The cognitists' consideration of competence and performance and the behaviourists' preoccupation with stimulus and response are heavily dependent upon listening and attention skills. The existing research findings are related to these two approaches.A rather detailed consideration of binary oppositions and the part they play in auditory discrimination is also undertaken as it throws some light upon the acquisition of a first language and thus desirable classroom practices.The writer as a result of this enquiry makes several specific recommendations f...
