Abstract

The Rio Mira flows from Ecuador into the Pacific Ocean in Colombia. Its ichthyofauna had been poorly studied and the few existing records indicated a very low richness of freshwater species. An incremented sampling effort in temporal and spatial scales along the basin of the Mira River in comparison with past inventories, allowed an increase in knowledge regarding the species of this River. This study reports the regional fish species diversity of six sampling expeditions conducted between 2009 and 2016. 37 species, 27 native freshwater fishes, one invasive species and nine that move upstream from the sea were recorded. The gathered material is deposited in the Coleccion de Peces del Instituto de Ciencias Naturales de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia ICN-MHN (Museum Collection of Fishes of the Natural Sciences Institute of the National University of Colombia). Existing anthropic activities in the zone may generate a detriment to the habitat, placing biological diversity at risk.
