Abstract
Abstract This paper describes the level of disposable income among 15‐ to 16‐year‐old schoolchildren. Based on data from a survey involving 12 schools and 1009 pupils in Leicestershire it suggests that a significant proportion of young people have a relatively high level of disposable income. The social correlates of ‘high disposable income’ pupils are examined. The significance of high disposable income is discussed in relation to alcohol consumption and evidence is found that any correlation between income and alcohol consumption among 15‐ to 16‐year‐olds needs to be understood in the context of the growing level of social activity of this age group and their new‐found earning capacity.
