Abstract

A systematic trend in the adsorption isotherms of alkanes onto smooth gold substrates has been observed as the alkane molecule becomes smaller. Analysis of isotherms and especially of the isosteric heat of adsorption found from temperature-dependent studies shows that this is a trend from adsorption as a liquid to adsorption as a gas, as a result of the weaker intermolecular interactions in the lighter liquids. 12 refs., 6 figs.
