Abstract

A relatively new method for densification of SiC compacts to produce high strength structural ceramics involves solid solution formation between wurtzite structure type α(2H)SiC and Al2OC or AIN. The solid solutions have the wurtzite structure and extend from 2 to 100 mol. % of the Al compounds. It is also known that Al2O3, and Al4C3 form a eutectic near 2150K. In the present work analytical methods were used to examine the solid/liquid reaction path followed by a powder compact of compositionxSiC+y(Al2O3+A14C3)= xSiC.3yAl2OC,where x=l and y=0.02, heat treated in nitrogen atmosphere near the eutectic temperature. At equilibrium one would expect complete solid solution of the Al2OC in SiC. For shorter times, as in the present case, a multiphase microstructure is to be expected.
