Abstract

In the present work, liquid–liquid equilibria (LLE) data for ternary systems, water + propionic acid or butyric acid + methyl tert-butyl ketone (MTBK), at (298.15 and 323.15) K under atmospheric pressure were measured. The reliability of the experimental LLE data was verified by the Othmer–Tobias and Hand equations. The distribution coefficient, together with the selectivity, was used to assess the extraction performance of MTBK. The universal quasichemical activity coefficient (UNIQUAC) and nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) models were used to correlate the experimental tie-line data, and binary interaction parameters for relevant process simulation were thus obtained.
