Abstract

The feasibility of a liquid phase hydrodechlorination (HDC) of mono- and di-chlorophenols (CP/DCP) below ambient temperature is demonstrated for commercially available Pd/C, Pd/Al 2O 3 and Rh/C catalysts. The relative importance of the physical (transport) and chemical (kinetic) contributions to 2,4-DCP HDC at 273 K has been assessed for Pd/C and Pd/Al 2O 3 catalysts; conditions wherein chemical control prevails are identified. The influence of temperature ( 273 K⩽T⩽303 K) on HDC rate is discussed and the apparent activation energies associated with the HDC of 2-CP, 4-CP and 2,4-DCP are provided.
