Abstract

Abstract : The results from part of a continuing study of the application of liquid-metal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) to practical systems are presented. Two possible components from the complete power system are covered - the MHD induction generator and the condensing ejector. The theory of the MHD induction generator required for the design is reviewed. This is followed by a discussion of the objectives and philosophy of this experimental program because they form the framework for the design. Included are the effects of the copper side bars and the field harmonics, and details of the construction of the generator. The predicted performance is summarized for operation with both single- and two-phase working fluids. Finally the preliminary test results without the working fluid are reported. (Author)
