Abstract

Topical fundamental research in liquid membrane permeation (LMP) involves scale-up of the homogenization and splitting procedure of liquid membranes. An additional problem is the calculation of mass transfer in a column including nonideal balance areas due to osmotic gradients. A model describing mass transfer on a single droplet considering reaction and diffusion terms, incorporated in a hydrodynamic column model, allows a concentration profile in a countercurrent contactor to be calculated. An overview of possible technical applications developed at TU Graz identifies the scope of the applicability of the LMP technique.
