Abstract

A cold-neutron source (CNS) was commissioned at the 10-MW Budapest Research Reactor and has been in routine operation since February 2001. A ‘direct-cooling’ moderator assembly with the proper helium cryogenic system has been installed, and at relatively small cooling power (thus modest costs) enhanced performance and improved safety characteristics have been obtained. The ensemble of the CNS and an upgraded guide system provides an intensity gain factor of 30–60 for five spectrometers at the Budapest Neutron Centre.
