Abstract

Dopamine, tyramine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and histamine can be quantitatively extracted from an aqueous medium into CHCl 3 using a liquid cation exchange reagent, bisdiethylhexylphosphoric acid (DEHPA). When conditions of pH and ion concentration are precisely controlled, the extraction of the amino acid precursors of these amines is very low (0.1–1%). These observations form the analytical basis for a sensitive and convenient radiometric assay for aromatic amino acid decarboxylases.
