Abstract

A short review is given on goal and design of the H1 detector at HERA. The large liquid argon lead/steel calorimeter is described. Prototype tests at DESY show that in the electromagnetic section an energy resolution σ E of better than 10% E can be reached. The space resolution is 1.85 mm. In the hadronic section, the shower is registrated in slices of 1λ depth. With such a sampling it is possible to correct for the different response of electrons and hadrons. A total hadronic resolution σ E = 0.52 E seems reachable.
