Abstract

MILK products are used in rations for growing chicks and laying hens either as the sole protein supplement or in combination with packing house by-products or vegetable protein concentrates.The common practice, where laying hens have only milk to drink, has been to omit protein concentrates from the mash. Martin (1925) and Cassel (1927) have shown that when all of the animal protein is supplied in the form of skimmilk or condensed milk, there is no advantage in feeding a dry mash containing ground grains and wheat by-products. Martin (loc. cit.), however, obtained maximum egg production when a mash containing 10 percent of tankage was fed in addition to skimmilk ad libitum.When chicks are given milk as their only drink it seems to be the practice either to use no other protein supplement or to include approximately 5 percent of meat scraps in the mash.Buttermilk and skimmilk, in .
