Abstract

The discovery of lipid vesicles has played a significant role in drug delivery systems paving way for the formulation of potent drugs, in improving their bioavailability and thus rendering improved therapeutics. The liposomal formulations are considered to be the supreme carriers since they can encapsulate both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs, thus ensuring targeted drug delivery. The liposomal carriers are widely used to deliver drugs to treat various diseases and ailments which include eye disorders, neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disorder and also in anti-tumor therapy. Among several applications, these novel carriers have fetched importance in anti-cancer therapy due to their unique binding abilities to specifically target the tumors by conjugating with respective antibodies or peptides. These liposomal nanocarriers are biodegradable and also ensure targeted drug delivery along with high encapsulation efficiency and significant activity with prolonged circulation in blood. This review deals with the potency of liposomes as nanocarriers in drug delivery and their significance in therapeutic strategy to treat various cancers.
