Abstract

Ritland, S., Blomhoff, J. P., Elgjo, K. & Gjone, E. 1973. Lipoprotein-X (LP-X) in Liver Disease. Scand. J. Gastroent. 8, 155-160.The abnormal serum lipoprotein LP-X has been examined by means of a qualitative immuno-electrophoretic technique in serum of 109 patients with various liver disorders and in 20 normals. In 74 instances the LP-X test was compared to the results of a blind histological investigation on well-defined criteria for cholestasis. All the 23 biopsies with positive histological signs of cholestasis corresponded to LP-X positive tests. None of the 46 LP-X negative tests corresponded to positive histological score. Five LP-X positive tests had no corresponding positive morphological criteria in the liver biopsy. However, serum alkaline phosphatase was raised in all af these patients. In the clinical material positive LP-X tests were found in 2 of 37 patients with chronic hepatitis, 4 of 8 early acute hepatitis, none of 9 late stage acute hepatitis. 13 of 14 biliary cirrhosis, 8 of 8 with large duct obstruction, and in 7 of 17 liver cirrhosis patients. This investigation confirms the claim that the LP-X test is a very reliable and sensitive one in demonstrating or excluding cholestasis and should therefore be regarded as a convenient test for both intrahepatic and extrahepatic forms of cholestasis irrespective of jaundice.
