Abstract

The membrane lipid pattern of brown algae differs from that of higher plants and green algae by additional lipid components [1–2]. A hitherto unknown phospholipid PX occurring in all brown algae tested so far, had been characterized [3] but the structure of its polar part remains to be determined. The betaine lipid diacylglycerylhydroxymethylβ-alanine (DGTA) is typical of certain orders, genera or species and may therefore be used as a taxonomic marker in cases, where morphological characters are unsatisfactory.
