Abstract

1. 1. Lipids from teneral and non-teneral tse-tse flies, Glossina morsitans, were isolated and their properties compared. 2. 2. The hydrocarbon fraction of the lipids represents a mixture of low and high molecular saturated hydrocarbons. A branch-chain saturated hydrocarbon with approximate formula C 42H 86 was isolated from teneral flies. 3. 3. Fatty acids from neutral lipids were investigated by gas chromatography. C 16:0 was the major saturated and C 16:1 the major unsaturated fatty acid. No polyunsaturated fatty acids were found. 4. 4. The phospholipids were separated by column chromatography on silicic acid. They consisted of 40 per cent phosphatidyl ethanolamine, 35 per cent phosphatidyl choline, 15 per cent phosphatidyl inositol and 10 per cent phosphatidyl serine. All fractions contained C 16:0, C 16:1, C 18:0, C 18:1 and C 18:2 acids.
