Abstract

Summary Cell differentiation in Anabaena fertilissima and Anabaenopsis arnoldii is accompanied by changes in the lipid composition of akinetes and heterocysts. Akinetes contain some unknown lipids including a glycolipid (GL-3) which are absent in heterocysts and vegetative cells. Digalactosyl diglyceride (DG) and phosphatidyl glycerol (PG) are absent in akinetes although they contain monogalactosyl diglyceride (MG) and sulphoquinovosyl diglyceride (SL). As DG is considered to be associated with oxygen-envolving photosystem II, its absence from akinetes may be a reason for diminished photosynthetic acitvity in these cells.
