Abstract

Technology transfer plays a central role in long-term economic growth, according to available evidence. This paper discusses a recent advance in technology transfer that could substantially improve the ability of US companies to take advantage of new knowledge in the outside world. The new approach to technology transfer, developed originally by Teltech. Inc. of Minneapolis, Minnesota and embodied in two government pilot programs in the US, provides companies with user-friendly access to (1) a network of several thousand peer-recommended technical experts across the country, and (2) interactive searching of technical and business literature data bases. Preliminary evidence indicates that this system of technology transfer is remarkably effective and, if adopted as part of a national program, might have a significant effect on economic growth and the standard of living.
