Abstract

This article provides insights into the way the Australian water sector is trying to link the concepts of asset management and sustainability, and where there are remaining challenges. Australia's water sector has made a strong commitment to broadening the focus of asset management to take into account sustainability principles. There are, however, a range of challenges to be met if this aspiration is to be turned into a reality. This research was undertaken to determine the level of progress that has been made and to identify remaining challenges with the explicit aim of identifying where research can be undertaken to help and what issues water utilities need to address. Integrating sustainability principles into asset management will expand the focus of decision‐making and require consideration of broader social and environmental issues in all aspects of a water business. This change is necessary if the water sector is to contribute to the sustainability objectives of the larger society.
