Abstract

Data are reported for four chromosomal interchanges (translocations) in Datura stramonium; Prime Types, designated PT: PT-45, PT-33, PT-19, and PT-22. Pollen abortion values for the heterozygotes were 3.5, 40.8, 16.4, and 30.2%, respectively. These same heterozygotes had no ovule abortion. The probable explanation is megaspore competition, i.e., a normal, nondeficient megaspore not in the favored position in the linear quartet of megaspores develops when the megaspore in the favored position is deficient (nonfunctional). This has been reported only in Oenothera. Three-point backcross linkage data were obtained between two genetic markers (pale-8 seedlings and white-2 flower color) in the 15.16 chromosome and PT-45 involving the 1.2 and 15.16 chromosomes and PT-33 involving the 7-8 and 15.16 chromosomes. The recombination between pale-8 and PT-45 was 15.5% and between pale-8 and PT-33 was 2.0%. Recombination values between white-2 and pale-8 and between white-2 and the two interchanges did not differ signi...
