Abstract

The paper presents the results of a one-dimensional linear theory of the FEL amplifier with planar undulator. The analytic solution of the initial problem is found with Laplace transformation techniques taking into account space charge fields and energy spread of the particles in the beam. The asymptotic gain formula for the case of the Gaussian energy spread is derived. It is shown that all the analytic relations (eigenvalue equation, asymptotic formula for the gain, etc.) written down in the reduced form completely coincide in both cases: for planar and helical undulator.
